Drone flight approvals at UI

The University of Idaho has an approval process for all drone flights conducted by UI faculty and staff to ensure safe and legal drone operations that appropriately mitigate flight risks. All proposed drone flights are reviewed by the University’s UAS Committee and approved by the Vice President for Research and Economic Development. The following are required as part of the drone flight approval process:

  • Written permission from the land owner or managing entity for drone flights and data collection to occur
  • Liability insurance on all drones being flown (note: all the Drone Lab’s drones are insured for liability through the State of Idaho)
  • FAA airspace authorizations if required
  • Detailed description of flight location and mission parameters
  • Description of steps taken to ensure compliance with FAA rules and state laws (e.g., when flying in public areas where people are present)

An important part of the setup process for new projects is securing the necessary permissions and approvals for University drone flights.

UI’s UAS Committee

The UI’s UAS Committee ensures safe and legal operation of UAS by University faculty, staff, students or third parties. The UAS Committee was established by the UI Vice President for Research and Economic Development to assess and approve all proposed UAS flights for compliance with state and federal laws, UI policy, risk, and ethical concerns. Many of the Drone Lab faculty are standing members of the UAS Committee.
